Fragrance

When I was a Teenager, I had a number of different drugstore scents in my collection. Each morning, I chose a scent according to my mood and my outfit - a sporty ensemble required a crisp, lemony fragrance; a ruffiy shirt needed a cloying jasmine-based scent; and so on. It wasn’t until I was 20, during a visit to France, that I even considered a “signature scent.” After a week there, it became apparent to me that the women - and men - I was with wore the same scent every day. Whats more, I could tell who was near me just by their scent; I could use my nose to “see” people just as much as my eye.

The idea of a personal scent fascinated me so much that I wanted my own. After visiting several parfumeries to try on scents, I found one - which I still wear today and which the people in my life have come to associate with me.

Splurging on one well-made, gorgeous scent that suits your personality is much easier and much more satisfying (i find) than having a dresser littered with numerous bottles of less expensive fravrances.

Choosina a Scent

To choose a signature scent, go to a department store or fragrance boutique and try on few perfumes. I realIze that magazmes offer all kinds of quizzes that tell you whether you should be wearing a spicy fragrance, a floral scent, a herbaceous perfume, and so on but in reality, you won’t know what will work until you try it on. That’s because perfume reacts differently on each person’s skin, depending on that person’s body chemistry. In other words, a scent you love in the bottle - or on your cousin or friend may smell putrid on you. When testing, don’t spritz yourself with more than four scents
a day. (Yes, it might take a month or more of this before you find a scent you love, but take your time; you get no prize for rushing.) Allow the fragrances to develop for 3 hours, 7 hours, 10 hours - noting how they develop with time. The fragrance you like throughout its development is most likely the fragrance for you.
