Making Eyes
A Few Months Ago I was getting my hair colored, when a discussion developed among the stylists and clients about what makes a person attractive. My hairdresser said, “It doesn’t matter what the rest of a person looks like - if he or she has beautiful eyes, he or she is beautiful. End of discussion.” And so the discussion ended, for who could argue with that? Eyes are the windows to the soul. They are also one of the first things we notice about each other, which helps explain the popularity of eye makeup. No other kind of makeup does so much to enhance - and change - our features as eye makeup.
Mascara
For many of us, mascara is the one thing we put on before answering the door or ducking outside to get the newspaper. Long, lush lashes are considered youthful and sexy, but I suspect the real reason we like mascara is the way it makes our eyes “pop” without making us look done up.
Mascara come in a wide range of formulas waterproof, lash-thickening, lash-lengthening, lash-curling, conditioning, glossy-finish types, and even non-flaking versions for contact lens wearers. Although black, black-brown, and brown are the most popular shades, mascara also comes in russet brown (great for redheads), aubergine, purple, royal blue, navy blue, forest green, teal, and other fashion shades.
When I was a teenager (you may have gathered by now that I lived in a small country town with not a lot for us to do), my friends and I were addicted to colored mascaras. We spent hours trying on different colors, trying to decide which shades made green’ eyes brighter, brown eyes more gold, or blue eyes seem icier. We liked our mascaras as bright as possible, but today I prefer more natural tones.
Eyeliner
Eyeliner can be drawn above upper lashes or below lower lashes - or both. Its primary purpose is to make the lashes look lush, but it also draws attention to the eye and can enhance or even change the eye’s shape. Eyeliner is available in a wide range of hues, from the common black, brown, and gray to more adventurous shades such as bright primary colors, pastels, frosty silvers and golds, white, and even glitter-flecked colors. The most common type of eyeliner is the pencil form, but liner also comes in a tube with a thin brush, in a felt-tip pen, and in cake form to be applied with an eyeliner brush. That said, there is no need to go out and purchase a special eyeliner simply use a small brush dipped into the eye shadow of your choice.
Eye shadow know-how
Eye shadow’s primary purpose is to enhance the eye’s shape. A dark tone makes an area recede, while a light or bright shade will bring an area forward. This is why eye shadow is often sold in kits of two shades - a dark and a light.
Eye shadow’s other use is to draw attention to the eye, which accounts for the many shades of purples, blues, greens, yellows, and oranges that come in and out of fashion. Eye shadow is commonly found in powder form, but it is also available in cream, with a sponge-tip wand, and in crayons.
