Beauty Needs Sleep

Sleep is essential for overall health, muscle tone, efficient fat-burning, and radiant skin. It is also necessary for clear thinking, physical stamina, good posture (who among us doesn’t slouch when we’re tired?) and a pleasant mood - four often overlooked aspects of beauty.

Having problems sleeping?

If you’re like most people, you’ve experienced one of the following: you crawl under the covers at 11 p.m. and lie there, eyes open, until 2 a.m. or 3 a.m. or 4 a.m; you wake up at some ridiculous predawn hour and never fall back to sleep; instead of deeply slumbering, you toss and turn all night and awake the following morning feeling tired and irritable; you repeatedly wake, then return to sleep throughout the night.

The side effects of sleeplessness are not pretty: studies have found that long-term insomniacs have 2 1/2 times more car accidents than those who sleep well. Insomniacs also demonstrate reduced productivity, impaired memory and concentration, and get sick more often due to lowered immune-system function.

Dealing with sleeplessness

If you’re like many people, you’ve also experienced anyone or more of these justĀ described symptoms for more than several nights running. If so, you probably had (or have) insomnia, the medical name for inadequate sleep that occurs for at least one week. Among the causes are a noisy environment, high caffeine or alcohol intake, recreation or prescription drug use, an existing illness, stress, a fidgety bed partner, or something else altogether. Yet, regardless of what causes insomnia, the results are the same: daytime tiredness, slowed thinking, slowed movements, moodiness, complexion changes (some people start breaking out, some look pale, others experience dry skin), and a haggard appearance. Fortunately, the occasional sleepless night and full-blown insomnia can be either prevented or banished with good sleep hygiene. If you’re having difficulty sleeping, take note of some of these simple rules.
